Carlos Alcaraz is a mystery for many of his opponents. He not only dominates the court with his hard-hitting forehand and backhand shots but also has many weapons in his armory, which can cause trouble for his opponents.
One such weapon that Carlos Alcaraz loves to use is the drop shot. The drop shot is often played when the opponent is standing pretty deep inside the court. Daniil Medvedev is one such player against whom the drop shots are quite effective.
The Russian likes to stand out so that he can get more time to adjust against his opponents shots and can reach to them easily. He launches his lethal forehand and backhand shots and secure winners. However, the Spaniard’s drop shots has caused him great amount of trouble.
It was visible at the Indian Wells Open final. Carlos Alcaraz defeated Daniil Medvedev comprehensively 6-3, 6-2. However, it was not just drop shots which created an issue for the Russian but also the Spaniard’s brutal forehands which he used carefully but effectively. In a recent interview, Daniil Medvedev talks about the problems the current World No.2 created for him with his mix of drop and forehand shots.
“They are very disguised. One out of two he’s going to make a dropshot, but the one he doesn’t make, it’s going to be a bomb forehand, so you can’t just run for it because then it’s going to be a winner. I’m going to be interested to play him more and more to try and see how I can handle this part better,” the current world No.3 told.

Daniil Medvedev’s weakness exposed

The Russian won four ATP singles titles this season. This includes Rotterdam Open, Qatar Open, Dubai Tennis Championships and the Miami Open. Meanwhile, the rest of the competition came to know about this difficulty of Daniil Medvedev against drop shots. Hence, most of them began trying it against him but the Russian came prepared on court. He was able to counter them and won the Miami Open singles title.
Although, he did win the competition in Miami, he still fears Carlos Alcaraz and his drop shots. He is also wishing that he may not need to face Carlos Alcaraz in the upcoming Madrid Open.
“I remember against [Carlos] in Indian Wells, I was like, ‘Yeah, I was not expecting this, the drop shot from this position!’ Then the next week in Miami I think a lot of guys maybe saw the final, so they started to do only drop shots against me. It’s not the same. It’s like, ‘Okay, continue doing it, I’m there!’ [and] against [Carlos], I’m not there. He’s playing great and everyone knows it. If you have him in your draw, it’s scary,” Daniil Medvedev continued.
Daniil Medvedev will start his campaign in the Madrid Open 2023 by playing against either Andy Murray or qualifier Andre Vavassori.
