Daniil Medvedev emerged victorious after an epic semifinal match against Germany’s Alexander Zverev at the Rod Laver Arena on Friday (January 26). After the match, Medvedev took a cheeky dig at Australian Open organizers for their scheduling of the matches.
This semifinal was entirely different from the first semifinal between Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner. Sinner easily defeated the 10-time Australian Open champion to reach his first Grand Slam final.
Between Zverev and Medvedev, the former took a huge advantage by winning the first two sets. The Russian fought hard to avoid getting knocked out, playing two tie-breakers in the process.
Medvedev won the third and fourth set 7-6(7-4), 7-6(7-5) before taking the fifth set as well to win the semifinals with a scoreline of 5-7, 3-6, 7-6(7-4), 7-6(7-5), 6-3.
After the match, Medvedev, who previously talked about not getting enough sleep due to the schedules, signed the camera with a cryptic message:
Not enough sleep but whatever.Daniil Medvedev’s message
Daniil Medvedev talked about getting less sleep after a late match against Emil Ruusuvuori
Daniil Medvedev’s road to the final wasn’t smooth at all. He started his Australian campaign by beating Terence Atmane in four sets, before beating Emil Ruusuvuori in the second round. The match stretched past midnight and ended around 3 am.
After the match, Medvedev joked that as he was used to playing tennis even without getting enough sleep when he was young, it sometimes helped him to pull off victories despite the matches ending in late hours.
When I was very young, maybe till 21, I went out. And, it was not good for my tennis.Medvedev said after his match against Ruusuvuori
I was not playing as I’m playing now, but maybe some practices without sleep, sometimes, helped me play today. He added
Before Alexander Zverev, Medvedev had to overcome a Hubert Hurkacz scare in the quarterfinals. The Russian defeated the Pole with the score of 7-6(7-4), 2-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
Jannik Sinner and Medvedev will now face in the final, scheduled on Sunday (January 28) at the Rod Laver Arena. They have locked horns with each other nine times previously, with the Russian leading 6-3 in their head-to-head record. They last faced each other in the ATP World Tour Finals which the 22-year-old won in three sets 6-3, 6-7(4-7), 6-1.
