Daniil Medvedev is back in Melbourne for the Australian Open. He seems to have bought his grudges from last year with him too. The Russian player was caught swearing at a fan without any obvious reason during his first-round win at Melbourne Park on Monday.

Medvedev spotted a fan and seemed to tell him to “f**k off” as he set up to serve for the win. It seemed a very strange time for Medvedev to do so as he was serving for the win at 5-2 in the third set. He was given a warning by the umpire and then closed the match by winning the point. The reaction pointed to Medvedev having last year’s back-and-forth with fans in his mind.

Daniil Medvedev criticized the Melbourne fans last year as he made it to the finals. He called them “low IQ” as they sometimes reacted badly to him. He also expressed his unhappiness with how they treated him during the final against Rafael Nadal, calling the fans disrespectful. Medvedev expressed his belief that the reactions were due to the fact that he was Russian. He has since admitted that his comments were “Not smart on my part.

After a year where he was banned from the Wimbledon due to his nationality, the 27-year-old may see things differently. His tennis, however, was on another level. Medvedev played at a great level to win his fourth match of the year.

Medvedev won the first round of the 2023 Australian Open comfortably. The Russian defeated American Marcos Giron in straight sets in a dominant victory. The 6-0,6-1,6-2 win was quite a show from last year’s runner up.

Medvedev quickly dealt with a match that looked harder on paper. The World No.8 won the first set without dropping a single game. He only dropped three games in the following two sets on his way to the second round. There were 28 winners and nine aces by the Russian in a one-hour thirty-six-minute match. Medvedev said post-match that he is pleased with his level.

He will face Australian John Millman in the next round. Medvedev is seeking to go one better than the last two editions of the Australian Open. He lost to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and then Rafael Nadal last year. He will seek to become only the fourth player to reach three consecutive Australian Open finals.
