“If I could have avoided facing them…” David Ferrer admits life would have been easy for him in absence of the Big-3

David Ferrer and The Big-3

Former World No.3 David Ferrer admits he wished to avoid the Big-3 players during his career if possible. Ferrer has a combined 11-59 head-to-head record against the Big 3 players. He has lost 8 finals against Rafael Nadal, 3 against Novak Djokovic, and 2 against Roger Federer. So the admission by the Spanish star is understandable factually. He could have won a lot of important tournaments if not for the existence of these three tennis greats.

As Ferrer said, “Honestly, if Djokovic doesn’t play (in the Davis Cup 2023), great. I never said I wanted to play against the best. When I was a player, I always said that if I could have avoided facing Federer, Nadal and Novak, it would have been much better. What is unfortunate is that one of the three was still there.”

Ferrer continued on the tennis legacy of Serbia and Spain from the Davis cup perspective, “Serbia is the team to beat, not just because of Nole, but because they have great players like Lajovic, Krajinovic or Djere and a good double. Spain have players to win the Davis Cup, but in the end there are a lot of things that don’t depend on me.” (Source: We Love Tennis, translated via Google)

David Ferrer played a number of matches against the Big-3 but did not find much success. The total head-to-head stood at 11-59. Against compatriot Nadal, he was 6-26. Out of which these, 8 meetings took place in finals, all won by Nadal. Against Djokovic, Ferrer had a record of 5-16 which included 3 meetings in the finals all of those which were won by the Serbian.

Ferrer’s worst record was against Federer as the Swiss thrashed the former World No. 3 in each of their meetings and has a 17-0 record against him. Out of 17 matches, 2 were in finals.

Despite the poor record against these tennis greats, Ferrer had a decent career overall. He won 27 career titles in his 19-year-long career and played an important role in Spain’s 3 victories at the Davis Cup in 2008, 2009, and 2011. He narrowly missed out on an Olympic medal when along with partner Feliciano Lopez lost in the Bronze medal match at the 2012 London Olympics to the French pair of Richard Gasquet and Julien Benneteau.
