Davis Cup will be restored to its former glory as ATP Cup set to be replaced by a more exciting ‘United Cup’ in 2023
Davis Cup
Tennis governing bodies are thinking to join hands to give Davis Cup a much needed boost and promotion. It will be an important decision which can affect the sport in more ways than one.
In the current arrangements, both ATP Cup and Davis Cup are being played in the season. The ATP Cup is being suspended for good and will be replaced with a “United Cup” which is planned to be a team tournament.
Tennis Australia has confirmed the recent developments. United Cup will be played to help the tennis players to prepare better for the upcoming Australian Open. The event shall be organized in 11 different cities in Australia at the start of the ATP tour. A huge cash prize of $15 million and ranking points shall also be awarded to the winning team.
Will Davis Cup get its shine back?
Organized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), The Davis Cup is the top global team event in the professional men’s tennis calendar. It is played between teams comprising of best men’s tennis players of that nation. The team which wins the tournament is called the “World Champion”. The ATP Cup is run by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).
In the past few years, with the introduction of ATP Cup and Hopman Cup, the charm of the Davis Cup has been lost on the fans and media. Importantly, players were reluctant to play in both the tennis tournaments which were organized in a space of just a few weeks of each other.
It will be interesting to see how the ITF and ATP can work together to make the Davis Cup tournament regain its position as the premier tennis tournament in the ATP calendar. Another point of contention is how the teams will be chosen. One way is to choose teams based on rankings which is how teams in ATP Cup are chosen. But in Davis Cup, the captain chooses its players.
The Davis Cup is one of the oldest tennis tournaments which has a distinct legacy of 122 years. The Billie Jean King Cup, originally known as the Fed Cup, is the women’s version of the Davis Cup.
