Serena Williams and Venus Williams are one of the most formidable doubles players in the history of tennis since they have won 14 doubles major titles together and three Olympic Gold medals as well and are undefeated in the finals of the Grand Slam tournaments. They have been crucial in popularizing women’s tennis over the last three decades and has left millions inspired by their journey to create their own legacy.
Serena bid adieu to the competitive sport after she lost in the third round against Ajla Tomljanovic at the 2022 US Open. She had cruised into the third round after defeating top seed Anett Kontaveit and getting another chance to play and gather memories in her final Grand Slam appearance. She received an emotional farewell with many celebrities in attendance at the Arthur Stadium to see the legend play for the final time.
With her retirement, Serena Williams’s quest to win another title ended which she had been constantly trying to achieve after her last major title win in 2017 and even failed to equal Margaret Court‘s record of overall 24 singles titles. She is one of the greatest players of all time and has won all her 23 major titles in the Open era. On the other hand, Venus Williams has managed to win 7 singles Grand Slam titles and has been very inconsistent with her performances lately due to her lack to form and fitness.
“Hope I can be that for other kids,” Coco Gauff hopeful of inspiring the future generation as Venus and Serena Williams
Coco Gauff, the upcoming sensation star from America had a disappointing defeat in her maiden quarter-finals at the US Open losing to Caroline Garcia in straight sets. During the post-match interview, revealed about drawing inspiration from Venus and Serena Williams and hopes to lead an example for future generations to come.
“I think for me, the Williams sisters definitely inspired me to play tennis because I saw someone like me playing a sport with not a lot of people looking like me. For any kid, but especially ones that look like me, I think for the most part, just continue to do what you want to do, no matter what people say. I hope I can be that for other kids. Yeah, that’s all I can say really. Just continue to be our authentic selves. Don’t try to feed into any stereotypes, just be you.” says Gauff.
She was surely disappointed with her defeat at the US Open but was delighted with her performance and hoped to be back soon stronger than ever. She added “I think after this I’ll have some time to reflect. I don’t have any tournaments for a while, so I’ll try to reflect on the season as a whole. For me, it’s hard to balance being proud and being disappointed. So I think I’m learning more to not be so disappointed in myself.“
