Emma Raducanu failed on the court in 2022 but still earned millions to add to her $5 million net worth
Emma Raducanu
Emma Raducanu huffed and puffed to complete her first full WTA Tour this year. She won the 2021 US Open women’s singles title. This triumph brought her into the spotlight immediately.
High expectations were from her coming into the 2022 season but she failed miserably at the Grand Slams and other major tournaments. This took a toll on her rankings. She started the year as World No.10 but finished it as World No.70 in the WTA rankings.
Her failings on the court, however, did not affect her off-court earnings. According to a news report published in the British newspaper The Sun, Emma Raducanu earned a whopping £22.8 million from May 2021 to May 2022. Endorsements comprise a major chunk of this sum. She could only earn £2.8 million with her performances on the court within this period.
Emma Raducanu’s transnational appeal has helped her greatly. She was born to a Romanian father and a Chinese mother in Canada and grew up in the United Kingdom. She is a British national and plays for Team Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup.
She is the brand ambassador of major British and international brands such as HSBC, Vodafone, Tiffany & Co., Dior, Porsche, Evian, Nike, Wilson, and British Airways. These endorsements helped Emma Raducanu earn £20 million. She is third on the list of Top Paid Female Athletes of 2022.
Tennis stars rules the Top Paid Female Athletes List 2022
Tennis superstars are the highest-paid female athletes in the world. Seven out of the Top 10 females who made it to the list are tennis players. Four-time Grand Slam champion Noami Osaka top the list with a total of £46 million. She is followed by 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams with £30.6 million. The major source of income for both the ladies is endorsements.
The 2022 French Open and US Open champion Iga Swiatek is seventh on the list with £7 million. But unlike the athletes ranked above her, The Polish player’s major source of income is prize money. She earned £4.9 million through her exploits on the court throughout the year. Endorsements have helped her earn £2.1 million. Similar is the case with 2022 Australian Open champion Ashleigh Barty. She is ranked 9th on the list with £6.6 million.
The youngsters such as 2022 French Open finalist Coco Gauff and 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Annie Fernandez are ranked 8th and 10th on the list respectively. Chinese freestyle skier Eileen Gu, American gymnast Simone Biles and South Korean golfer Ko Jin-Young are the other athletes on the list.
