2024 brought a whole entry of returning players who were out of the game from the past year. Emma Raducanu, one of them, returned to the courts of Auckland to play her first match in eight months. Lucky for her, she had a great outing and entered the professional tennis front with a bang after eight months.
After having surgeries on both wrists and her ankle back in early 2023, Raducanu came back strong to win her first match of the tour and is grateful to be able to move her body and not be bedridden or in a wheelchair.
She was up against Romanian Elena Ruse, who gave her a strong fight for the win. The Brit started the match rather comfortably with strong serves that were backed up by powerful strokes.
However, the game did not get easy for the former US Open winner, who lost the second set before making a well-deserved comeback to win the match and advance to the next round.
The 21-year-old continues to express her gratitude to be back on the court and is excited to carry on the season without any problem.
It’s difficult after having such a long hiatus and I’m grateful to be healthy & able to move my body and Not like bedridden or in a wheelchair and It’s amazing to be out here & playing and I’m just really happy to be back on the tour and can’t wait to start this season & carry on, hopefully, injury free & healthy.Said a delighted Raducanu after winning her first match after 8 long months.
Emma Raducanu gets drafted alongside seed No. 2 Elina Svitolina as her second opponent after her comeback
After 8 long months, youngster Emma Raducanu makes a comeback at the ASB Classic, where she beat Elena Ruse 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 to advance to the next round. However, due to her draw, the Brit gets matched against the No. 2 seed.
Raducanu started her year with a great victory. Being one of the top players on the tour, she gets placed against Raducanu, who is short on ranking.
Elina Svitolina had to play the very experienced Caroline Wozniacki in her first match of the year and won the game pretty smoothly. The final score was 6-4, 6-3, with the Ukrainian dominating every aspect of the game.
Svitolina, who looks in great form, will look to continue it throughout the year, whereas the young Brit who just returned will make her time on the court count and hopefully grandly announce her comeback. Nonetheless, fans will look forward to this match between the WTA stars.
