With the 2024 Australian Open less than a month away from getting started, the list of the players set to feature in the competition has already been released.
There are a few of the most surprising names coming up who not many would have expected to play in the tournament. The two top names that have completely taken the entire tennis industry by storm are Emma Raducanu and Dominic Thiem.
Both former US Open winners will be coming into the tournament with the hope of getting back on track. Both have suffered various injuries continuously throughout their careers, which has extensively hampered their growth.
Regarded by many tennis pundits as one of the best prospects in the sport, they failed to reach their utmost potential to this point, and only time will tell if they can still make it count.
Having incurred several surgeries in her wrists and ankles Raducanu will feature in the competition with a special ranking of 103 but will have it go through the qualifying rounds having fallen just five spots short of the main-draw cut-off mark. Well, another victim of wrist injuries.
Thiem will also be relying on the qualifying round draw, having fallen just one spot short of the main draw cut-off mark.
The other big names set to feature at the competition
Apart from Thiem and Raducanu, some other big names are making their return to the competition. David Goffin and Diego Schwartzman have been inducted into the list of men’s qualifying rounds.
Both players started the 2023 year in a shambolic manner and were on the brink of falling out of the Top 100 mark but with the right results in recent times, they have got themselves a place in the qualifying rounds.
Former World No. 5 Sara Errani is also expected to make her entry into the competition after her good performances in the ITF and WTA 125K circuits. Other big names coming up are Benoit Paire and Maxime Cressy, along with a veteran of women’s tennis, Hsieh Su-Wei, who is also set to play at the competition after having entered through a special ranking.
