“For sure!” Daniil Medvedev affirms Novak Djokovic should play the US Open for the sake of his rivalry with Rafael Nadal

Novak Djokovic’s vaccination saga just keeps getting bigger with each passing day. The Serbian has refused to get vaccinated and as a result, has suffered a lot this season. He wasn’t allowed to defend his Australian Open title for the same reason and wasn’t allowed to compete in the Golden swing too.
He has missed last week’s Montreal Masters and is missing the ongoing Cincinnati Masters due to the vaccine mandate imposed by the US government. Vaccination is mandatory to enter the USA and for the same reason, Djokovic will most likely miss the upcoming US Open too.
There have been many people, including celebrities and politicians who have raised their voices in Djokovic’s support. The argument is that if there is no spike in Covid cases in the USA, why should there be a mandatory vaccine mandate? In the press conference at the Cincinnati Masters, World No.1 Daniil Medvedev also shared his views on Djokovic’s ban.
‘I like it when the tournament has the best players in the world’: Daniil Medvedev
Medvedev believes that Djokovic should be allowed to play in the US Open but the matter is not in his hands. He wants to see the best players in the world go up against each other and hence wants to see Djokovic compete.
“Yeah, for sure. I cannot do anything. It is the government that sets the rules, so I do not know if it can actually change or not. If you ask me, if I would be the decision-maker, sure I want Novak to play. I like it when the tournament [has] the best players in the world,” Medvedev said.
Medvedev also mentioned the iconic Djokovic-Nadal rivalry and wants the Serb to play in New York for the sake of it. Djokovic is just one major away from equalling Rafael Nadal’s record of 22 major titles and the US Open would’ve been the perfect opportunity to see who comes out at the top.
“This competition against Rafa is super intense and super interesting,” said Medvedev. “So I would love to see him there in New York. But, if for the government rules, he cannot be there, well, everybody is still going to try to do their best and try to win [the] US Open.”
