Rafael Nadal vs Casper Ruud: Preview
Rafael Nadal already has a very special place in tennis history books. He will forever be deemed as the greatest fighter even if everything else, the records, and the stats are put aside. He has written another chapter on his mental toughness in that book this year. Coming back from an injury, he surprised everyone by winning the Melbourne Summer Set and then peaked at the right time for the Australian Open where he came from two sets down in the final to win his 21st grand slam title. He continued his good run and won the Mexican Open a couple of weeks later. He then also reached the final of the Indian Wells Masters after which he was unfortunately ruled out for a month due to a hairline rib fracture. His comeback at Madrid wasn’t easy. He lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinal and then his chronic foot condition hurt him in Rome where he bowed out of the Round of 16.
Many weren’t confident about Rafa at Roland Garros but he once again proved why he is the undisputed king of the Parisian clay. He eased past the likes of Jordan Thompson, Corentin Moutet, and Botic van de Zandschulp in the early rounds before getting tested by Felix Auger Aliassime in the fourth round where he was pushed to five sets. In the quarterfinals, he showed why he’s considered to be the best defender in tennis history by beating arch-rival Novak Djokovic against all the odds. In the semifinals, he was handed a walkover after Alexander Zverev retired mid-match after getting his ankle twisted.
Casper Ruud had done very well on the ATP 250 circuit in the previous two seasons and as a result, was consistently rising up the ranks. He was very unfortunate to miss the Australian Open due to an injury but started the season well by winning the Argentina Open in clay. He then made it to his first Masters final in Miami where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz. He then had an ordinary European clay season by his high standards with a couple of quarterfinal outings at Barcelona and Munich before he finally reached the semifinal of the Italian Open and then won the Geneva Open.
This fortnight in Paris, Ruud battled past Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Emil Ruusuvuori, and Lorenzo Sonego in the initial rounds and then registered a solid win over Hubert Hurkacz in the fourth round. He then got the better of Danish teenager Holger Rune in the quarterfinal before eventually beating Croat veteran Marin Cilic in the semifinals in four sets 3-6,6-4,6-2,6-2 to reach his maiden grand slam final.
Rafael Nadal vs Casper Ruud: Head-to-Head
This will be the first meeting between the duo. The two haven’t met on tour before and hence their H2H stands deadlock at 0-0.
Rafael Nadal vs Casper Ruud: Prediction
As sad as it may sound, this could realistically be Nadal’s last match at Roland Garros. With so many injuries to tackle, Rafa himself isn’t sure what lies ahead for him. But ahead of the final, he has clarified that he is physically fine which is enough to name him the huge favorite to win the match. He has shown immense grit and power all fortnight and will be extra motivated to do it for one last time and go down in the history books as the greatest sportsman ever. On the contrary, Casper Ruud will play his maiden grand slam final against a man whom he has idolized all his life. The 23-year-old has already created history by becoming the first man from Norway to reach a major final and he definitely would want to take it a step further.
Having said that, history will definitely be written on Chatrier despite the result and as things stand, the great man from Mallorca is expected to end the GOAT debate by clinching a record-breaking 14th Roland Garros and 22nd grand slam title.
Prediction: Nadal to win in four sets.
