Seventh-seed Andrey Rublev will look to start the tournament on a bright note as he will go up against Laslo Djere in the first round at the French Open 2023. Rublev has a best-ever finish here in 2020 and 2022, where he reached the last-eight stage, and will at least try to achieve his best-ever performance at the Roland Garros. Djere, on the other hand, will try to give his opponent a run for his money and, in the process, go as deep as possible into the tournament.

Andrey Rublev vs Laslo Djere: Preview
Forced to play as a neutral at Roland Garros, Rublev has had a satisfactory to even good season so far. The 25-year-old made it to the finals of the ATP 500 Dubai Tennis Championships and the ATP 1000 Monte Carlo Masters. Besides this, the World No.7 also reached the quarterfinals of the 2023 Australian Open, before going down to the eventual winner of the tournament, Novak Djokovic.
Rublev also reached the Round of 16 of Indian Well Masters and Miami Masters. The start to the clay season for Rublev this year has been sedate, however, he would have hoped for much better results. The player from Russia did not go past the Round of 16 in both the ATP 1000 Madrid and the Rome Masters. These results cap off Rublev’s season so far — not so good and not so bad.
Having said that, at Roland Garros, Rublev will have to be on top of his game right from the word go to entertain any chances of going deeper into the second Major of the year. On the other hand, Djere has a sorry 2023 so far. The Serbian, besides the Chile Open and the SRPSKA Open, where he reached the quarterfinals, hasn’t fared well in the entire season.
A second-round exit at the Australian Open, and first-round and second-round exits at the Indian Well Masters, Miami Masters, and Monte Carlo Masters sum up an unconvincing season for the 27-year-old. However, what will give solace and some motivation to Djere is his performance at the 2023 Italian Open. After crashing out in the first round itself at Madrid Masters, the World No.57 came up with an inspired performance and made it to the fourth round of the Rome Masters.
Also, in between these two ATP 1000 events, Djere also reached the final of a Challenger tournament, which essentially means that he is carrying some sort of form heading in Paris. Thanking the ATP head-to-head record, both Rublev and Djere have met each other thrice, with all their matches being played in 2022. Rublev enjoys a 3-0 head-to-head lead over his Serbian counterpart, though Djere hasn’t come out to be an easy opponent for Rublev.
This can be evidenced by the fact that it took five sets for Rublev to defeat Djere in the first round of the 2022 US Open.
Andrey Rublev vs Laslo Djere: Prediction
Clearly, on the basis of form, there are no questions whatsoever that Rublev is the favorite to emerge victorious from this encounter. Djere, as he has previously done, may push his opponent to his limits, but one can’t see him causing an upset over Rublev. Anything other than a straightforward victory for Rublev can be a worrisome sign for the Russian, such as the competition this year at Roland Garros.
Prediction: Andrey Rublev to win in straight sets.
