Third seed Jessica Pegula will kickstart her campaign at the 2023 French Open against compatriot and former World No. 7 in the women’s singles category, Danielle Collins. Pegula, who last year made it to the last-eight stage at Roland Garros before eventually bowing out, will be looking for a better result this time around. Collins, on the other hand, has been woefully out of form this year; however, she is a former Australian Open finalist, and when she gets going, she can be really dangerous.

This year, Pegula hasn’t exactly set the tennis court on fire. Having said that, the 29-year-old hasn’t performed badly either and has at least made it to the quarterfinals of most of the tournaments. The 2023 season for Pegula began at the Australian Open, where she made it to the last eight before losing in straight sets to Victoria Azarenka.

Next up for the World No. 3 was the 2023 Qatar Open, where she achieved her best result this year, reaching the summit clash of the WTA 500 event before going down against Iga Swiatek. This was followed by a semifinal, a third round, and another semifinal finish at the WTA 1000 Dubai Duty-Free Championships, the Indian Wells Open, and the Miami Open, respectively.

The clay season, however, hasn’t brought out the desired results for the Americans so far. After a quarterfinal finish at the WTA 1000 Madrid Open, Pegula shockingly made an early exit at the subsequent 2023 Italian Open. Pegula came into Rome high on confidence but couldn’t get past countrymate Taylor Townsend, as she lost in three sets (2-6, 6-3, 3-6) in the first round itself. It would be interesting to see what kind of challenge Pegula poses to her opponents in Paris.

On the other hand, Danielle Collins hasn’t been able to replicate the performance that she managed last year, when she achieved a career-high World No. 7 ranking and made it to the final of the 2022 Australian Open.

Leaving aside the ATX Open, where she managed a semifinal finish, Collins hasn’t made it to even the last-eight stage at any other major tournament. A third-round finish at the Australian Open, first-round exits at the Abu Dhabi Open, Dubai Tennis Championships, and Indian Wells Open, besides a few second- and third-round finishes, are all Collins has been able to come up with in 2023.

Interestingly, Collins didn’t participate in the Madrid and Italian Opens, and hence, she has yet to play a match in the clay court season this year. As a result of poor performances and non-participation, the 29-year-old has seen her rankings plummet from World No. 7 in July 2022 to World No. 41 currently. Despite all this, the American can’t be taken lightly and can choose the French Open as the perfect platform to shrug off her lean patch.

Looking at their WTA head-to-head, the two Americans will face off for the fifth time, with Pegula enjoying a 100 percent record, winning all her previous encounters against Collins to take a 4-0 lead. The two ladies also squared off this year at the WTA 1000 Miami Open, where Pegula managed an easy, straight-set victory.

Being compatriots, the two players know each other’s gameplay really well. Moreover, while Pegula is performing at the highest level, let us not forget that Collins, too, is a former top-10 player and hasn’t performed to her caliber for just these few months only.

Hence, the match is bound to be exciting, and fans can witness many swerves during the match. Having said that, purely on the basis of form, it’s Pegula’s match to lose, though Collins will definitely not serve the win on the platter for her friend.

Prediction: Jessica Pegula will win in three sets.
