In a recent round table interview for the UTS tour, Patrick Mouratoglou, Benoit Paire, and Gael Monfils, three highly esteemed French names in the world of tennis, discussed the reason for the sheer domination of the Big 4 of tennis. Each of them shared their personal views on the topic and a particular comment by Monfils led to a hilarious conversation between him and Mouratoglou.
All three of them believed that the reason was totally psychological. Patrick Mouratoglou said that other players approach the Big 4 players with a sense of preconceptional fear or nervousness, which ultimately works as a disadvantage for them. He added that this starts with the junior circuit itself. “The fact that they (the Big 4) have always been above, even in junior, they do not approach you in the same way as they approach an Alcaraz,” said the star coach.
To this, Monfils hilariously interjected by pointing out that he had defeated Novak Djokovic in the Juniors but never managed to do so in the Challenger and ATP circuits, where he is 19-0 down against the Serbian.
“I didn’t lose against him (Djokovic) in junior practically, I beat him in Futures, that doesn’t count but I already beat Novak (laughs). It’s in my stat, even if it’s not really in my stat,” Gael Monfils said. To this, Benoit Paire said, “Go to the ITF website, you’ll see.”
Gael Monfils’ abysmal record against Novak Djokovic
Monfils and Djokovic have played a total of 19 matches against each other and the Serbian has won all of those encounters. However, it is true that Monfils did defeat Djokovic once in the Futures.
Out of those 19 wins, 13 were on hard courts, 2 were on clay courts, 3 were on indoor hard courts and 1 was on grass. Their most recent match took place in the 2023 Cincinnati Open, where Novak beat Gael 6-3, 6-2 in the 3rd round of the tournament. The Serbian went on to win the tournament and then also won the US Open after that. Goes without saying that the Frenchman has had a horrible record against the 36-year-old.
