Novak Djokovic played a challenging opening match at the Monte-Carlo Masters. With the first set moving into a tiebreak and qualifier Ivan Gakhov showing off some incredible shots, Djokovic was definitely struggling a bit. Nevertheless, the Serb managed to triumph in the end. And rooting for him on the sidelines was F1 star, George Russell.
A few days earlier, the Ferrari driver, Charles Leclerc, was also spotted at the event to support compatriot Hubert Hurkacz. Russell is currently a driver for Mercedes alongside 11-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton. Currently seventh in the standings, Russell won his first-ever Formula 1 race at the Sao Paolo Grand Prix last year.
The World No.1’s match against the Russian was his first win at Monte Carlo since 2021. The Serb is looking forward to clinch his third Master’s title in Monaco in the absence of Rafael Nadal. Clay not being the hard-court specialist’s forte, Djokovic struggled through the first set of the match but eventually overcame his difficulties on the slippery surface.
Following the match, Djokovic was also spotted making conversation with Russell. Djokovic said that he had a good start despite the problems he faced. Russell lamented to the Serb on how challenging it must be for players to wait in anticipation for matches. Djokovic replied in agreement, saying, “Should I be warming up or cooling down? That makes you a bit anxious. But I’ve had a few of those situations in my shoes”.
The pair went on to discuss the Brit’s next race and the logistics behind the tedious Formula 1 schedule as well. The 22-time Grand Slam champion will now compete against either Lorenzo Musetti or qualifier Luca Nardi on Wednesday. Djokovic, who last won the tournament’s championship in 2015, is attempting to make a strong showing in Monte Carlo this year.

Novak Djokovic’s kids cheer for the Serb at Monte Carlo
As a dedicated father of two, Djokovic is surely an inspiring role model for his kids, Stefan and Tara. Often spotted in the stands, along with the Serb’s wife, Jelena Djokovic, the kids happily show up at matches to cheer for their dad. Unsurprisingly, the entire family was also in attendance at the Monte Carlo Masters.
Out of the pair, Stefan has been more inclined towards the sport as compared to his younger sibling. Djokovic often practices with his son on the tennis court. Last year, the loving duo was seen practicing on the grass courts at Wimbledon as well.
