“Getting closer to the end!”Stan Wawrinka hints at retirement following 1st round withdrawal at US Open

Stan Wawrinka

Stan Wawrinka, the three-time Grand Slam winner, known to have the strongest backhand on tour, has been struggling with his form due to continuous injuries which have been a major concern. The Swiss player faced a major setback when he chose to retire midway during his first-round match against Corentin Moutet of France at the 2022 US Open. He stated he does not wish to continue due to his finger injury concern even after getting medical assistance which did not help at all. He even failed to make his presence felt at the ATP events in Montreal and Cincinnati as he was handed early-round exits.

It was the sixth straight defeat for Wawrinka and he has only managed to win three out of the thirteen matches he played this year after making his comeback almost over a year due to his surgeries and rehabilitation to be fit to play. The Swiss player is a gold medallist with his compatriot and doubles partner Roger Federer at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and has been crucial in leading his team to the victory at the Davis Cup in 2014.

“I still love the game and want to compete a bit longer before stopping!”: Stan Wawrinka emotional after being forced to withdraw at US Open

Stan Wawrinka

Wawrinka‘s inconsistent form has made him think the inevitable when he himself hinted at his retirement during his post-match interview after his tragic withdrawal at US Open. He even expressed his desire to compete in a few more matches and be on the winning side before he plays for the final time. He said “I’m getting closer to the end. That’s for sure. It’s a reality. I was injured for more than a year. It took me a while to feel much better physically and tennis-wise. I still love the game and want to compete a bit longer before stopping. Even if I’m not winning yet, I know I will be back winning matches soon. That’s for sure.

He revealed the fact that age is not in his favor still he will still put his best foot forward and win some big games that he can cherish in the future. He added “As much as I enjoy and love what I’m doing, I want to keep going a little bit for sure. Will need to have some results too, because you cannot just keep losing. But I see that I’m playing and feeling better. I will never be able to play as well as I did in my career, because I’m getting older, but I believe that I still have some good and big results in me, and that’s why I keep gonna fight a little bit.
