Sofia Kenin and Max Wenders

Dutch tennis coach Max Wenders has been restricted from the sport for 12 years for match-fixing, the International Tennis Integrity Agency said Wednesday. The ITIA said Wenders confessed to “multiple match-fixing charges” and also disclosed that he destroyed evidence and failed to report a corrupt approach. One of the charges against Wenders came under a rule which prohibits people involved with the game to “directly or indirectly, facilitate any Player to not use his or her best efforts in any Event.”

The ITIA didn’t disclose the time period and place the alleged conduct happened, and it didn’t even name any players. The ITIA said Wenders was banned and fined $12,000 at a hearing in April 2021 but that the charges weren’t published until now following submissions from Wenders’ legal team. He is not allowed to attend any tennis tournament which is approved by the sport’s main governing bodies until 2033.

Earlier, the organization banned Vernier Quinteros earlier in July over match-fixing offenses and Before that, an Italian chair umpire was handed a suspension. Tennis remains one of the most flagged sports according to IBIA’s statistics on betting alerts which considers examples of potential fraud in the gambling industry.

While the punishment for Wenders has been announced, players like Kenin and Ostapenko would have been relieved to have not been dragged in the controversy as the Dutchman worked in close quarters with them in the past couple of seasons.
