Coco Gauff will be facing the Spanish player Rebeka Masarova in the first round of the Roland Garros. The last year’s finalist in the second major, the American player is eager to deliver her best tennis in the clay tournament. During the press conference, Gauff said that she was looking forward to working with Patrick Mouratoglou for two weeks in Paris.
The 19-year-old had a disappointing start this year. She exited the Australian Open with her fourth-round defeat at the hands of Jelena Ostapenko. At the Dubai Championships, Gauff faced a tough loss after being defeated in the semi-finals by Iga Swiatek. In her clay campaign, the American player had early exits at the tournaments of Stuttgart, Madrid and Rome Open. While failing to triumph in the singles, Gauff’s partnership with Jessica Pegula achieved some great accolades. The ‘dynamic duo’ made four final appearances in WTA Tours and claimed the trophies of the Qatar and Miami Open.
The American player has started working with Patrick Mouratoglou ahead of the French Open. In early April, Gauff split with her former coach Diego Moyano. They have been working together for a year and have decided to part ways after the Miami Open. During the press conference in Paris, World No.6 stated that she is looking forward to working with Mouratoglou and also continuing her search for a full-time coach.
“We started after Madrid, and it was just through the clay season he’s helping me out. I’m going in between coaches, to be honest. I haven’t really found a full-time coach, I guess. Obviously, he’s still with Holger(Rune). But I have a great relationship with Patrick. I have known him since I was 10 years old and obviously been on the court with him before. I thought he would be a perfect person to help me during this time. I’m looking forward to the next two weeks with him,” she said.
Gauff reached the Italian Open final with Jessica Pegula in the doubles category. However, they were defeated by Storm Sanders and Elise Mertens in straight sets.
Coco Gauff criticized the Madrid organizers for silencing the female players
Coco Gauff, along with her pairing with Jessica Pegula, reached the final in the doubles category at Madrid. However, their incredible run came to an end after losing the match to Beatriz Haddad Maia and Victoria Azarenka. During the award ceremony, the players were shocked to see that their speeches were cut at the last minute. They were just rushed to take pictures and exit the arena. On the other hand, the men’s doubles category was given the chance to address the crowd.
While commenting on the situation, Gauff said that silencing the players in any tournament is not justified. She added that the players should be addressing the crowd who took time to showcase their support.
“I do think the player should address the crowd, people who came and supported the event. But I think it was just more about the principle behind it, that in future cases, maybe me or somebody else criticises the organisation or tournament, maybe deeper than what was said, I don’t know, maybe racism, homophobia, something like that. You can’t just cut, no speech, no nothing. You have to take those criticisms,” she said at the press conference in Italy.
After facing a lot of backlash, the Madrid officials issued a public apology to all the affected players.
