“He will be super difficult to beat here” Alex Corretja believes Nick Kyrgios will be the next big thing at Wimbledon

Nick Kyrgios had a brilliant grasscourt season reaching the semi-finals of two events before finishing as the runner-up at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. Kyrgios’ good run on the surface saw him rise from World No. 78 to be back into the Top 50 and he looks to rise further if he continues with the good run that he is in.

With two semi-final runs in Halle and Stuttgart followed by a Round of 16 finish in Mallorca, Kyrgios was looked on as one of the underdogs coming into Wimbledon and he certainly did make a brilliant run only to lose the finals against the 3-time defending champion Novak Djokovic who has now gone 9 years unbeaten on Center Court and has registered 28 consecutive wins at the Grand Slam.

Kyrgios impressed a whole lot of people with his performance at the Championships and one of them was former World No. 2 Alex Corretja who discussed the performance of the Australian and hinted that he could be the successor of the likes of Djokovic and Rafael Nadal at least at Wimbledon.

“I think he is learning how to be himself, but at the same time, be a good tennis player. In a couple of weeks, he will realise and be pumped to continue growing, and if he becomes a little bit more consistent, he will be super difficult to beat here. Soon Djokovic won’t be here and Rafa won’t be here, and he [Kyrgios] is probably the one with the best grass-court game.

“So Nick has a chance in the future to win here, and I am sure he will be motivated. He had a great grass-court season, and I’m sure he will be back and will control his emotions,” said Corretja speaking on Eurosport after the Wimbledon finals were played out, the first time Nick reached a Grand Slam singles finals.
