Rafael Nadal proved once again why he’s called the ‘King of Clay’ and won the 2022 French Open against all odds. He won his record 14th Roland Garros title by beating Casper Ruud in the final in straight sets 6-3,6-3,6-0. This was his 22nd grand slam title and he is now 2 majors clear of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

A lot of talks before and during the French Open were about Nadal’s foot condition. The Spaniard lost in the Round of 16 of the Rome Masters due to his foot condition and hence didn’t have the best preparation coming into Paris. He was not at his 100% during the French Open and later revealed that he was playing the final on injection with a numbed foot.

Due to his injury status, there is still a lot of uncertainty around his participation at Wimbledon. Nadal had earlier said that he would try to play The Championships if his foot allows. He is currently getting treatment on his foot and if it goes well, he will definitely enter the All England Club for the first time in 3 years.

Rafa’s uncle and former coach, Toni Nadal recently shared an update about his nephew’s injury. Speaking to journalists in Stuttgart, Toni Nadal said that he had a conversation with Rafa over the phone and he seemed a lot better. He said that while he was in pain a few days ago, things are looking fine now and Rafa wants to train. He will start training on Monday on the grass at Mallorca and if there is even the slightest of chances, Nadal will compete at Wimbledon this year in a couple of weeks’ time.

“I talked to Rafa. At first, he said: ‘Everything hurts.’ But when we spoke yesterday, he said it was much better. He wants to train. And if he has a little chance, he will play at Wimbledon. He goes on the court on Monday,” Toni Nadal said.

Can Rafael Nadal complete the calendar slam?

This is the first time in his career that Nadal has won both the Australian Open and the French Open to start the year and is in contention to complete the calendar slam. Nadal wasn’t won Wimbledon since 2010 so again, he won’t be the favorite going on the English grass but he didn’t win the Australian Open either since 2009 until earlier this year. So given the momentum, he could very well be a serious contender at Wimbledon if he stays fit, and given US Open’s unpredictability, anything can happen.
