Former tennis star Patrick McEnroe has come out in public to defend Novak Djokovic over the mystery drink saga at the Paris Masters. During the semifinals at Bercy, Djokovic’s trainer Ulises Badio and other members of his team were seen mixing a drink for the 21-time Grand Slam champion secretly. What baffled everyone was the way they were hiding the mixing process.

After this, many alleged Djokovic of using some banned substance for performance enhancement. However, there was no proof that Djokovic is using any illegal substance and even his wife clarified that all these claims are totally baseless. While many questioned Djokovic regarding the same, some even came to his support to dismiss all the rumors.

Patrick McEnroe, in a recent episode of the Holding Court with Patrick McEnroe podcast, spoke about the issue and defended Djokovic against all the false claims. He argued that like Simona Halep, if Djokovic would’ve taken any illegal drug, then he would’ve tested positive for it but that clearly is not the case.

“As we found out recently with Simona Halep testing positive, these players are getting tested all the time. So if there was anything illegal in the drinks that they were mixing, which they do for them all the time during matches, it’s likely that he would test positive for it,” McEnroe said.

Novak Djokovic qualified for the ATP Finals in Turin despite missing two majors and multiple Masters tournaments which speaks volumes about his class. He has won 5 year-end championships but the last one came 7 years back in 2015. He has since made it to two finals but has failed to cash it in.

This year, he has been placed in a tricky group along with the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Andrey Rublev. The Serb will play his opening match on Monday night against Tsitsipas.
