Australian showman Nick Kyrgios stunned World No.1, Daniil Medvedev, in the Round of 16 of the 2022 US Open. Kyrgios convincingly won the match in four sets 7-6(11),3-6,6-3,6-2 to reach the quarterfinal of the US Open for the first time. With this win, Kyrgios becomes the first player to defeat the No. 1 seed twice in one year since 1987.
Kyrgios has had a tremendous season so far and is looking very consistent. He had a decent first half but got his motor running in the grass court season. He reached his maiden grand slam final at Wimbledon where he lost to Novak Djokovic. He then had a good North American swing too where he won the Washington Open.
In the fourth round against Medvedev yesterday, Kyrgios played aggressive tennis and blasted more than 50 winners past the World No.1. He was clearly the better player and even before the match started; he was in contention for a win despite playing against the defending champion.

With this win, Kyrgios has opened up the top section of the draw and is now amongst the favorite to stand the lone survivor in the top half. He will face Russian Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinals and if he wins, he would face either Matteo Berrettini or Casper Ruud in the semifinals.
Give his popularity amongst fans, social media erupted after Kyrgios’ win and predicted him to go all the way because realistically, he could win the final and with one good day, he has all the arsenals to be a grand slam champion.
