Holger Rune, who embroiled himself with the audience and his opponent Jannik Sinner in the semi-final match at Monte-Carlo Masters, has given his take on the war of words between Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev. The Dane thinks that it may actually be a positive thing for the sport.
Holger Rune, who is famous for applying unusual and annoying tactics and some verbal communication to help himself prevail over his opponents, has advocated for more such means to be used by players. According to him, such tactics make the sport more entertaining and engage fans.
In a recent interview on the sidelines of the BMW Open in Munich, Germany, Holger Rune candidly talked about what he thinks about their controversial encounter.
“That’s actually a very good question. You can’t have 100 players in the top 100 who are all best friends with each other. There will always be moments and things that will happen, like for example between Zverev and Medvedev. For us, as players, it would certainly be easier if we managed this on our own so that it wouldn’t be known,” the current world No.7 said.
“But for the fans, for the audience, and to gain new fans, it’s cool to have personalities and things coming in and out. It has to go a little further than just passing the ball. Fans admire the sport, but also the characters. If you can show it to a point, that’s a positive thing for the sport,” he continued.

Holger Rune and Justine Henin seem to be in agreement on this controversial issue
Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev played against each other in the Round of 16 match of the Monte-Carlo Masters. Although, the German was on the verge of winning the match twice as he got two advantage points, but the Russian’s loud words and some unusual tactics led to the current World No.16 blowing up both his chances and handing the match to Daniil Medvedev.
Later, Alexander Zverev called Daniil Medvedev “an unfair athlete” and condemned his behavior as “disappointing“. Former Belgian tennis legend Justine Henin did not agree with the German and does not think that what Daniil Medvedev did was in terms unfair. On the contrary, she and Holger Rune seem to be on the same page in terms of their opinion on this controversy.
“Things are getting spicy, It’s going to be interesting, everyone is talking about this thing between Zverev and Medvedev. It happened already in the 80s with other players, and it was nice. Things are getting spicy, It’s going to be interesting, everyone is talking about this thing between Zverev and Medvedev. It happened already in the 80s with other players, and it was nice,” Justine Henin said in an interview comparing the behavior of players in the 1980s.
She even supported Holger Rune for using annoying tactics to get under the skin of Jannik Sinner in their match in Monte-Carlo.
“Facing Sinner, it wasn’t mean. In any case, he will have to continue to assume this role until the end if it is the one he wants to take. He will sometimes be reframed a little by the other players and by the referees to remain respectful towards everyone,” the seven-time Grand Slam champion had stated.
