The current World No. 9’s rise to the big scene was the breakthrough story last season. He won the 2022 Paris Masters tournament by beating Novak Djokovic in the final. Hence, there were great expectations from the young Dane. However, until now he has failed to play at the level he would have liked or had hoped for.

Holger Rune started his 2023 season by participating in the Adelaide International 1 tournament; however, he was knocked out in the first round. He then made his Australian Open debut. He reached the fourth round of this competition, however, could not beat Andrey Rublev. But he did win the hearts of many tennis fans as he went down fighting in a match that was decided in five sets. The scoreline read 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7(11)-6(9) in favor of the Russian.

He then participated in the Open Sud de France tournament. Here, he reached the semi-final round but lost to Maxime Cressy. He next played in the ATP Rotterdam Open. Here, he had to retire in his second-round match against Gijs Brouwer. He won his first-round match against Ben Shelton 6(7)-7(9), 6-4, 6-2 in the ongoing tournament at Acapulco, Mexico. He will take on Nuno Borges in the second-round of this competition.
