Holger Rune has made it to the quarter-finals of the 2023 French Open men’s singles. He is set to face Casper Ruud in the next match. Leading to this encounter, Rune took part in a fearsome match against Francisco Cerundolo in the fourth round of the tournament. The match featured a mistake from the umpire in the third set, which led to Rune getting an advantage. Rune, after the match, expressed that it was not his fault, as the decision was entirely up to the umpire.
Rune hit the ball after it bounced twice. Cerundolo spotted it and stopped his approach to the net. The umpire Kader Nouni missed the double bounce and penalized Cerundolo for stopping the play, which resulted in him losing a point. This infuriated Cerundolo, and Rune did not say anything.
“When I hit the ball, I didn’t know it was a double bounce. I just ran. When I saw it after he said it, I saw after the dot on TV, I saw it double bounced. The point had already been played. The referee announced the score. I felt sorry for him. I was able to break him, I kept my serve, after he broke me. It was pretty close. It’s tennis, it’s a sport. Some referees make mistakes, sometimes in my favor, other times in his favor. That’s life!,” said Rune about the incident.
The match was thrilling and lasted for 3 hours and 49 minutes. As the match was very tight, this mistake might have turned the result of the match in Rune’s favor. The emotions of Cerundolo are justified, but Holger Rune was not at fault because it was the umpire’s incompatibility that resulted in Francisco Cerundolo’s point loss.
