After his disappointing elimination from the 2023 China Open in the Round of 16 at the hands of Grigor Dimitrov, Holger Rune has already started preparing for his upcoming tournament, the Shanghai Masters. The Danish tennis player recently shared a video of the locker room for the Shanghai Masters, where they have put a massive poster of him beside the names of the past winners. The 20-year-old was evidently very thrilled to see that and he could not help but share it with his fans and friends over social media.

“How cool is this locker room,” wrote Holger Rune in the caption as he posted the said video on X (formerly called Twitter). Rune’s fans were totally supportive of him in the comments of the video and some people also commented regarding the greatness of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, as the list of past winners of the Shanghai Masters literally only had those two names.

Holger Rune’s mother recently revealed that he is struggling with the back injury that he incurred in the 2023 Wimbledon Open. Apparently, Rune was slightly injured in the French Open itself, which escalated in the Wimbledon Open and now it hurts his back whenever he serves. This has had a clear impact on his performance lately, which is visible.

The Danish player had a great season in 2022, having won the Paris Masters, the Bavarian International Championship, and the Stockholm Open. In 2023, he was off to a great start after winning the BMW Munich Open. Unfortunately, the aforementioned injury had a major impact on his performance in the latter half of the season.

Holger Rune’s loss to Grigor Dimitrov in the China Open

Rune was off to a good start in the 2023 China Open as he beat Felix Auger Aliassime in the first round of the tournament in straight sets to make it to the Round of 16. There, he met World No. 19 Grigor Dimitrov and was deemed the favorite. However, the Bulgarian broke the odds and ended up defeating Holger Rune 6-3, 7-5 in straight sets. Rune will now look to change things in the Shanghai Masters. The expectations from the youngster are low after his back-to-back disappointing performances. He will now have to prove the masses wrong with a big win. However, it is the general opinion of everyone that the 20-year-old should look to end his season as soon as possible so that he can recover properly from his injury.
