Nick Kyrgios has been one of the breakthrough performers of the year. He reached his maiden Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon. Though he lost the finals against Novak Djokovic, he managed to cement his name among the elites. The Aussie looks to kickstart a strong campaign in 2023 with his participation in the United Cup.
He won the Citi Open but had a disappointing fourth-round exit at the US Open. Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the semi-finals of the 2022 Japan Open due to a recurring knee injury. The Wimbledon finalist had also withdrawn from the Swiss Indoors in order to get adequate rest. Kyrgios and his doubles partner Thanasi Kokkinakis qualified for the Year-end Championship but failed to go past the round-robin stage. Although starting the year ranked outside the Top 100, he ended the year ranked in the Top 20 for his spectacular campaign in 2022.
The United Cup will be starting from the 29th of December till the 8th of January. The 27-year-old player seems excited to kickstart the 2023 season on a great note. He admitted that the event is important, especially for fans who get an opportunity to see their favorites. He even stated that he looks forward to playing in front of his home crowd, especially during his favorite time of the year.
During an interview, Kyrgios said ” There’s nothing better than to play the Australian summer is one of my favorite times of the year. Obviously being home, but being able to play in Sydney, in front of the home fans, my family, and my friends, there’s nothing more that I love. To be honest, I’ve never really played that great in Sydney. But I’m hoping I’m going to change that narrative at the start of the year.“
Nick Kyrgios makes his comeback at the French Open in 2023 after five years
He had stated that the French Open ‘sucked’ and should be removed from the ATP tour. To prove his point, the former World No 13 hasn’t played a single match at the French Open since 2017. The 7-time ATP singles title winner hasn’t advanced past the fourth round at the second Grand Slam of the year.
His best performances have been in the years 2015 and 2016 and have only reached the third round. However, he admits to his comeback to the French Open in 2023. He admitted that the decision is because of his partner Costeen Hatzi’s request who wishes to see Paris. Otherwise, Nick Kyrgios stated that he would have preferred to stay back home like the other times.
His on-court behavior needs no introduction as his sudden outbursts of emotions has bothered him time and again. His habit of bashing racquets along with verbal spats with chair umpires and spectators are his way of showing his frustration on the court. Despite getting fined, Kyrgios’ behavior sees no change. World No 22 had an altercation with the chair umpire and the linesman at the World Tennis League in Dubai. His anger isn’t constrained only to the court. He had been frustrated after losing the prestigious Newcombe Medal to his compatriot Ashleigh Barty.
