“I am one of the best players in the world,” Maria Sakkari confident about winning Wimbledon 2022

Maria Sakkari
Maria Sakkari is currently amongst the best in women’s tennis and is constantly rising up the ranks. Having made her mark at the French Open last year, she reached the fourth round of the Australian Open this year to start the season. She then made it to the final of the St. Petersburg Open and also reached the semifinal of the Qatar Open.
Sakkari then reached the final of the Indian Wells Open where she lost to Iga Swiatek. The Greek didn’t have the best clay-court season where her best performance was a quarterfinal outing at the Italian Open. She has done well on grass so far. She had a quarterfinal finish at the Nottingham Open and also made it to the semifinal in Berlin.
Ahead of Wimbledon, Sakkari said that she is one of the best players in the world and intends to win Wimbledon. She talked about thriving in pressure and how she manages to handle it.
“I am one of the best players in the world. I got to number three, now number five. If there’s no pressure now, when is it gonna be? The better you do, the more pressure and the more expectations people are gonna have from you. But the year is so long. We play for 11 months, 10, and 11 months, so you cannot be having every week at your peak,” she said.

‘Wimbledon means a lot to everyone because it’s not all about points’: Maria Sakkari

This year, Wimbledon is not offering ranking points as a stand against them banning Russian players. Sakkari spoke about the situation and said that the tournament isn’t all about points. She made it very clear that despite everything, her goal is to win the tournament and she’s going to be gunning for it from word go.
“Wimbledon means a lot to everyone because it’s not all about points. I grew up with a love for the sport and it’s fine. If you do well, this year, you’re gonna get awarded with points [at other tournaments], and doesn’t really matter if that one tournament doesn’t have points. Of course for some players, it’s tough because they cannot defend the points but I’m gonna go in there and try to win. That’s my goal. And that’s what I’m going to try and do from my first match,” she said.
