“I couldn’t do anything” Jannik Sinner reveals Wimbledon defeat to ‘beast’ Novak Djokovic gave him sleepless nights

The 3-time defending champion at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, Novak Djokovic, defeated the 10th seed Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals to deny the Italian youngster his first Grand Slam semi-final. Djokovic was tested to his limits by Sinner but it was not enough to see the Serbian lose the match as he came from 2-sets down to win the last 3-sets after giving himself a prep talk in the bathroom.

Djokovic won the match 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 to stay in the tournament and go on to win it a couple of days later winning his 21st Grand Slam title. For Sinner, the only accolade he could take was to reach a quarter-final at the Championships as he was 0-4 in main-draw grass matches prior to this year’s Wimbledon and despite that managed to reach the quarter-finals only to be taken down by the best in business and not without a scare.

With Sinner taking a 2-set lead, many thought it was game over for the Serbian. Novak however showed his mental prowess once again as he did not give a single chance for Sinner to take the upper hand in the next three sets. While it was certainly a disappointing defeat for Sinner given the position he was in, the Italian took it as a learning lesson but not without some tough pills that he had to swallow as he also had a nasty fall during the match risking a big injury.

“Every time I lose a match, I don’t sleep. After the match, I immediately watched the highlights and the recordings. I want to learn right away. I played a good match. I regret not being more aggressive in the third and fourth sets. I couldn’t do anything in the fifth set. I had a beast on the other side of the court. He deserved to win. I have to say that in every tournament I play, I play to win. Obviously following my injuries and problems this season, I take confidence from what I achieved at Wimbledon,” said Sinner speaking with La Repubblica.
