Alexander Zverev has explained his controversial decision of playing in the Saudi Arabian exhibition tournament in December. The German has not played a single professional match since his injury back at the French Open in June. The former world number two required a wheelchair to leave the court, as he suffered a couple of ligament tears in his ankle.

Alexander Zverev was ready to make his comeback in September, however, he required another surgery after being diagnosed with bone edema. The German will finally make his comeback in Saudi Arabia next month, where he will join a plethora of world-class players. His decision to compete in the country has not gone down well with his fans, given the track record of human rights in the Arab nation.

However, Alexander Zverev has revealed his thoughts on the same, and believes that the exhibition tournament could pave the way for future stars from Saudi Arabia. “I just hope that as many [fans] as possible come fall in love with the game of tennis,” Zverev commented.

“I think there were not a lot of opportunities to see the best players in the world in Saudi Arabia. So I hope a lot of young kids are going to see this and take the sport of tennis forward in Saudi Arabia.” As well as sharing his hopes for tennis to become popular in the kingdom, Zverev explained why he needed some matches at exhibition level ahead of his return to the tour,” said Zverev.

Alexander Zverev revealed that he cannot wait to be on court at the Diriyah Tennis Cup exhibition. He expects stiff competition at the event, given that some of the world’s finest players have confirmed their presence.

“I’m just looking forward to being back on court being back on a competitive court because it’s been a very long time for me. The best players in the world are there so it’s gonna be high level tournament and I think everybody’s in form because they’re still either coming from Davis Cup or they just came from the ATP Finals so everybody will still be playing great tennis and I hope I can keep up with them,” Zverev added.

Alexander Zverev had a decent clay court season, before he suffered his injury against Rafael Nadal in the semifinals of the French Open. The German reached the semifinals of Monte Carlo Masters, and also managed to reach the finals of the Madrid Open. He was also looking like a strong contender to claim the French Open title, and could have pushed Rafael Nadal all the way in the last four battle.
