“I need a shot clock at local court” Hubert Hurkacz’s bizarre ‘return technique’ against Felix Auger-Aliassime has the tennis world in splits

Hubert Hurkacz and Felix Auger-Aliassime

World No. 12 Hubert Hurkacz and World No. 9 Felix Auger-Aliassime engaged in a thrilling battle in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Halle Open with the Pole advancing ahead with a 7-6(2), 7-6(4) in 1 hour and 46 minutes to register his first win over the Canadian after the first two meetings between them were won by Felix.

Felix’s brilliance on the serve is not a surprise anymore and the Canadian made life difficult for Hurkacz once again as the grass surface is said to be the best for service as the ball gets extra pace from the surface and upon bounce gets a strong push to deceive the receiver. Hubert was finding it difficult to return and despite claiming the win, it was surely a match that could have had a different winner had Felix been clutch at the moment.

Hurkacz was candid in his post-match on-court interview where he revealed how he tackle the difficult service of Aliassime and the answer had the whole of Twitter amused. “As you probably see, I had absolutely no chance on the return. Actually, in the middle of the second set, I was guessing all the time wrong so I figured out another idea, I was looking at the shot clock. If the number was even, I was going left, if the number was odd, I was going right, so that was my tactic for the return,” said Hurkacz.
