Daniil Medvedev had a disappointing end to his season as he crashed out of the group stages of the 2022 ATP Finals. Having contested in the last two finals of the year-end championships, it was a rather poor result from the Russian as he goes home without a single win this week.
What was more disappointing for him was the fact that he lost all the matches in the tiebreaker of the 3rd set. It was also his 8th consecutive defeat this year to a Top-10 ranked player as Novak Djokovic won the match 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(2). Djokovic reaches the semis with 3 back-to-back wins boosting his chances of winning the title.
Medvedev was quite disappointed with the result and in his candid self did not mince his words to express his feelings. He had been inconsistent this season and it was the story at the ATP Finals as well as he failed to capitalize on the clutch moments.
“No, that’s my answer, sorry. I mean, I guess was a good fight, but no positives, no. Super easy, I sucked. That’s what happened. It’s disaster. What I’m really happy is that this match didn’t count in going out of the group, otherwise I would have two matches where I lost serving for the match.
“At least this one didn’t count. But, yeah, that’s awful. I’m going to try to be better next time. I have no other choice,” said Medvedev speaking with the press. The Russian had served for the match against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round-robin match and was frustrated by his today’s performance as well.
Daniil Medvedev matches his worst performance at the ATP Finals with tonight’s result

Medvedev was playing in the Finals only for the fourth time. The Russian made his debut back in 2019 after a brilliant hardcourt season as he finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the US Open. He however could not replicate those in the Finals as he lost all three of his matches in a poor debut at the year-end championships.
Medvedev returned better in 2020 as he went on to win the title having topped his group as well winning all three matches including a straight-set win over Djokovic. He then beat Dominic Thiem in the finals who was the then reigning US Open champ.
In his title defense at the 2021 edition, Medvedev topped his group once again but lost to Alexander Zverev in the finals. He had defeated the German in the group stages but could not repeat the feat in the finals as the German won his second title at the event.
