Nick Kyrgios is currently showing the consistency that he has never shown before. He has won 15 out of the last 16 matches he has played with the only loss coming against Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. He reached his maiden grand slam final in Wimbledon and then followed it up with a title triumph at the Citi Open.

In Montreal this week, he defeated in-form Sebastian Baez in the opening round comfortably and then stunned World No.1, Daniil Medvedev, in the second round in three sets. Kyrgios now holds a 3-1 H2H record against Medvedev, who is one of the best players in the world currently. In the next round, he defeated fellow countryman Alex De Minaur in straight sets to book a date against 8th seed Hubert Hurkacz in the quarterfinal.

“Is this just a ticking time bomb?”: Andy Roddick on Nick Kyrgios

Former World No.1 and American legend, Andy Roddick spoke highly of Kyrgios in a talk with Tennis Channel. He spoke about Kyrgios’ massive ball-striking ability and unpredictability and how that makes him even more dangerous. He further added that Kyrgios is the only one in contemporary times who can be compared with the Big 3- Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. But Roddick also questioned whether this situation is just a ticking time bomb or whether he’ll realistically explode.

“Listen, based on balls and strikes, Kyrgios is playing on a whole new level. He has options, doesn’t he? We wonder if he will attack constantly or if he will stay a little behind. I think Kyrgios is able to adapt to everything De Minaur does, because he has a wide variety of situations. I think he’s the only one who can compare to the big three of this generation (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic), but I don’t know if he’s going to explode yet – he’s played a lot of games. Is this just a ticking time bomb?” Roddick said.

After Montreal, Kyrgios will compete at Cincinnati and will then take a week’s rest before playing the US Open. By making it to the quarterfinals this week at the Canadian Open, Kyrgios has ensured that he’ll be seeded for the US Open.
