British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu made a sad, now-famous confession in a recent interview with The Times, saying that she sometimes wishes she did not win the US Open at the age of 18. Faced with a barrage of problems, both in terms of physical injuries and the mental stress of handling such fame at a tender age, Emma has come to believe that life on the tennis tour isn’t what it seems to be at first glance.

“Sometimes I think to myself I wish I’d never won the US Open, I wish that didn’t happen. I was under so much pressure to perform, people had no idea what was going on and I had to have this facade, to keep everything inside. It has been really hard,” she said.

While it can be generally agreed that Emma is definitely going through a rough patch in her career and that she has to deal with serious amounts of pressure, this has not stopped fans and fellow tour players alike to mock her condition, with most of them accusing her of letting the fame and attention get to her and ruin her career.

The most recent of these comments have come from French player and journeyman Corentin Moutet, who had this to say about Emma’s statement.

Tennis fans and players around the world were quick to respond to Moutet’s comment, which has now gone viral on Twitter. Most of them opined that berating a fellow athlete for opening up about their struggles ends just as well as one might think.

At the start of May this year, Raducanu underwent surgery on both wrists and one of her ankles. She stated that fully recuperating from this would take her at least a few months. This essentially means that the Brit will very likely miss the French Open and Wimbledon Championships.

It will come as some relief for the Brit that being at the young age of 20 with a lot of time left to mature her game and mindset, she will have ample amount of opportunities to prove to the world that she is not a one–slam wonder.

It goes without saying that Emma Raducanu has left her mark on the Tour already. Her story began spectacularly, but will it finish as one of the best ever? Only time will tell.
