22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal suffered a shocking loss in his opening match of the 2022 Paris Masters. He lost to American Tommy Paul in the second round in three sets 6-3,6-7(4),1-6. Nadal was returning to action for the first time since the US Open but his return lasted very less than he’d have wanted in Bercy. After this, Nadal is scheduled to close his season at the ATP Finals but seeing his physical capacity against Paul, doubts still loom over participation.

The indoor hard courts have been Nadal’s field of weakness over the course of his career. The pacy courts don’t suit his topspin game style at all and hence, he hasn’t won any big title in it- neither the Paris Masters nor the ATP Finals. His chances of winning in Turin are also pretty low given the nature of the surface and the attacking playing field. To avoid this, many believe that Nadal should skip the ATP Finals and rather focus on the next season’s start in Australia.

Nadal spoke about his chances of playing in the ATP Finals given his poor performance in Bercy. He said that if nothing major happens, he hopes to compete and is excited to do so despite the last two months being quite disappointing.

“If nothing happens, I hope to be there,” Nadal told the media on Wednesday evening in Paris. “No, I’m excited about playing, even if haven’t been the perfect couple of months for me, of course.”

He said that he has nothing to lose and is just trying to give his best. He intends to reach Turin early and get some practice sets with the best players in order to get back in form.

“Nothing to lose. After a good year, going there, just trying my best. At the end I need days on the tour, you know. It’s true that for the last five months I didn’t spend enough days on the tour. I don’t even say competing on a tennis court. I say on the tour. Practicing with the guys. That’s what I need. I gonna try. If I am feeling okay, to be there a little bit earlier than usual and have some practices,” Nadal said.
