Iga Swiatek claims 61st win of the season in San Diego, talks about her career peak as she eyes 8th Tour title

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek is back on winning tracks as she defeated Chinese teen sensation Qinwen Zheng in the Round of 16 at the 2022 San Diego Open. Swiatek was yet again taken to the 3rd set by Zheng but like their French Open meeting, Swiatek found the way.

Swiatek won the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to win her 61st match this season. Her tally is now the highest since Caroline Wozniacki won 60 matches during the 2017 season. Swiatek is now into the quarter-finals for the 12th time this season in what is her 16th event this season.

“It’s pretty amazing. I wasn’t expecting to have this kind of season this year. I thought, maybe, I’m going to be at my peak when I’m 24, 25, and have that experience, maybe results like that are going to come. I’m pretty happy that I am able to give my all right now and to play well and to be in that place.

“As I said in Ostrava, my dreams are coming true. So I’m pretty proud of myself and the team that they are preparing me and I’m able to play good to the end of the season,“ said Swiatek during her on-court interview after defeating Zheng.

Iga Swiatek to take on Coco Gauff in the quarter-finals

Speaking about playing Zheng once again, Swiatek praised the young teenager who forced a 3rd set once again against Swiatek.

“Qinwen, she has a different game style because she’s playing topspin on her forehand and the ball is flying pretty high. So today I had to adjust to that. But overall, the first matches of any tournament is about adjusting to the conditions we have here,” said Swiatek.

With the win over Zheng, Swiatek will now take on local girl Coco Gauff in what will be the repeat of the 2022 French Open finals where the Pole emerged victorious. Gauff comes into the match with a win over Bianca Andreescu in 3-sets.
