With the WTA season having already come to an end, the top 6 players of the 2023 season have already been announced. It’s been another year at the top for Iga Swiatek despite losing her top spot for a month in between to current World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka. Another name that has come down the ranks to hit the absolute roof is the American youngster, Coco Gauff.
The top 3 stars along with Wimbledon Champion Marketa Vondrousova, WTA finalist Jessica Pegula and Elena Rybakina have been nominated for the 2023 WTA Player of the Year award. Elena Rybakina started the season with a bang making it to the later stages in the majority of the tournaments. But soon couldn’t end the year on a high because she had regular fitness issues.
As for Marketa, her nomination is no surprise after how she went on to lift the title at Wimbledon starting as an unseeded player. Jessica Pegula won the Canada Open where she won against Iga Swiatek. While many feel that the battle for the trophy will be in between the two women stars at the top.
Others are rating US Open Champion Coco Gauff to have a clear chance of winning, thanks to an impressive display in the second half of the season. She had a brilliant run during her US stint where she won the Citi Open. Followed by Cincinnati Open, where she had her first win over Iga Swiatek, and then her first Grand Slam title at the US Open. Coco admitted that the US Open win lifted the weight from her shoulders.
