World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has often talked about her support for Ukraine, and she reiterated the same after winning her fourth Grand Slam trophy. She urged the tennis community to come together and make an effort to at least do something for Ukraine.

The Pole defeated Karolina Muchova in the French Open final 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 on Court Philippe-Chatrier to defend her Roland Garros crown, which was her fourth trophy in her four final appearances in the Majors tournament. After the match, she admitted that had her life been disrupted due to a war, she would have found it difficult to compete, and for this, she showed her respect for the Ukrainian players.

My support goes to all the Ukranians, because I know that their situation isn’t easy. Like if I would be in their shoes, I don’t know if I would be able to compete, honestly. So I really, really respect them, and I want to kind of keep my focus on doing what’s gonna be right for them. Yeah, that’s all I can honestly say,” Swiatek said at the post-match press conference.

Notably, Swiatek has chosen to wear a Ukraine ribbon on her cap to show her solidarity with the citizens of Ukraine as well as the players. She is one of the players to do this on the tour.

Swiatek was asked about the controversy surrounding Aryna Sabalenka regarding the Russia-Ukraine war. Owing to journalists’ questions on the war and especially on Belarus’s involvement in the war, Sabaleka opted out of appearing at the post-match press conference.

Amid the controversy, her pictures with Belarus’ dictator Alexander Lukashenko also went viral. And when Swiatek was asked about the same regarding the Belarusian, she admitted to not knowing much about the controversy as she was focused on her matches.

But I’m not using a lot of social media and not reading a lot. So honestly, if I didn’t have lie briefs rom my PR team, I wouldn’t even sometimes know about this stuff,” she said, adding that she will try to understand the situation properly because of the tournament has ended.
