“I’m done with controversy” When Serena Williams refused to answer sexist questions at Wimbledon

Former World No. 1 and 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams is no stranger to unnecessary controversies and unwarranted remarks against her. The tennis great has gone through numerous moments like these in her glorious career which has been going on for nearly 3 decades and has seen the tennis star win every possible trophy in the sport.
Williams has been however faced a lot of criticism on the court right from her outfits to playing style even her shot selections and stamina often being compared to that of a man funnily accusing the player of being a male in a sport of women’s. Serena has squashed all of these baseless rumours over the career but like everyone person has their own limit of allowing digs at themselves, Serena’s limit was breached a couple of years ago and instead of fighting, the American chose to peacefully surrender over the issue.

Grunting in tennis has been a debated issue for long with players letting out grunts while hitting the shots and it has nothing to do with the strength and power of the player. Apart from Serena or the WTA Tour as such, even the ATP Tour has many players who let out a grunt during the matches and the amongst the active players on the ATP Tour, the list includes the likes of Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem and even the upcoming star Carlos Alcaraz.
Serena however found herself on the wrong side of mocking once again during her title-winning run at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships, her 6th title at the Grand Slam. Serena had defeated Victoria Azarenka in the quarter-finals and was scheduled to take on arch-rival Maria Sharapova in the semis. Serena had been laughed at for her grunting and when she was asked about the same during the press conference after the win over Azarenka, the American was just done with it.
“I’m done with controversy. I can’t. I’m tired. I have to do ice bath. If you have any other questions, I’m cool, but, you know, I’m done with that,” said Serena completely refusing to answer any deal of questions regarding the issue which had turned into sexism as her male counterparts were not questioned on the same thing.
