Alexander Zverev will finally return to action for the first time since June 2022 when he takes the court at the 2022 Diriyah Tennis Cup in Saudi Arabia. Zverev had suffered a horrific injury during the semi-finals of the 2022 French Open that left him on crutches and needing immediate surgery.

Post the surgery, the rehab forced Zverev to end his official season as in no way could he have made a safe return to action. With eyes on the 2023 season, the German has signed up for multiple exhibition events to get match practice against the best of the players on the Tour to be match ready for next season.

In a recent interview taken by the organizers of the Diriyah Cup, all the players were asked a few questions related to the tournament and the sport. When asked why they think they can win the tournament, Zverev gave a cold reply, saying, “I haven’t played in seven months, and I’m the hungriest out of all of them.”

Zverev‘s run to the semi-finals of the French Open this year took him to a career-high rank of World No. 2. He had a shot at World No. 1 on multiple occasions this year but failed to grasp them. To his misfortune, Zverev could not play a single match as the World No. 2 and slipped to World No. 12 as a result of his absence.

With many objectives to complete next season, Zverev has decided to get maximum playing time and he starts with the event in Diriyah. Playing in Saudi Arabia has been controversial lately but the German has not bothered himself with the frowned upon discussion and will be indeed playing the 3-day event.

9 players have been confirmed on the tournament’s website so far and it promises to be an action-packed event with big stars. Daniil Medvedev, Stan Wawrinka, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz, Cameron Norrie, Dominic Thiem, and Nick Kyrgios are set to feature alongside Zverev.
