World No. 1 Novak Djokovic locked his place in the quarter-finals of the 2022 French Open by making easy work of Diego Schwartzman in their fourth-round battle. Novak won the match 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 in 1 hour and 54 minutes to clinch his eighth consecutive straight-set victories, a streak that began at the 2022 Rome Masters.
Novak is into the quarter-finals of the French Open for the 16th time in his 18 appearances at the Grand Slam and also clinched his 88th win in his 103rd appearance. A good run this year in Paris will ensure that Novak keeps his World No. 1 ranking which he has now held for 370 weeks and is moving closer to Steffi Graf‘s all-time record of 377 weeks at the top of the rankings.
“I am glad because of the consistency. In order to be the number one, you need to play well, be consistent and defend points, feel that pressure over and over again. It’s Mount Everest in tennis, particularly in this generation. Being number one was always the highest goal coming into the season, success is even bigger by playing in the era with Federer and Nadal.
“It took me years and years to win the title at Roland Garros, many heartbreaks. When I won in 2016, it was a huge relief. This is probably the hardest Slam for me, last year the last seven days were the toughest in my Slam career,” said Djokovic in his press conference after having gotten the better of Schwartzman.

The winner of the clash between Rafael Nadal and Felix Auger-Aliassime will take on Djokovic in the quarter-finals making the tie one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament so far. While there is no doubt about Nadal’s ability on the surface, Felix has also put in some impressive performances on the surface which further makes the quarter-final clash an interesting affair.
