Emma Raducanu made a name for herself when she won the US Open title in 2021 at the age of 18. She entered the tournament as a qualifier and went on to win the title without dropping a set. She was the first qualifier (male or female) to win a Grand Slam tournament in the Open Era and jumped over 300 places in the ranking list overnight.
While the now world no. 75 has struggled to replicate her earlier success, she did gather all eyeballs with her historic Grand Slam win. As a result, she has been at the receiving end of endorsement deals with major brands like Nike and Porsche. She has worn pieces from the French luxury label Dior frequently and recently shared a series of pictures from a photoshoot for the brand.
Earlier today, Raducanu uploaded 4 pictures on Instagram simply captioned “by @Dior”. Clicked at the Ritz London, it marks the young tennis player’s collaboration with the luxury brand that started a year ago. Raducanu donned a series of looks that had her fans going ga-ga.
In the first of four pictures she shared, Emma Raducanu donned a floor-length scarlet dress with a ruffled Bardot neckline, puffed sleeves cinched at the elbow, and a sensuous thigh-high slit. The dress was cinched at the waistline with what appeared to be a belt made of the same fabric as the dress. The outfit was paired with black heels.
The second look featured Emma in a sheer, champagne-colored camisole, with a cardigan in a similar tone, and a billowing, floor-length ink-blue skirt. This look was accessorized with a reptilian-patterned mini Lady Dior bag.
The third look of Emma was shown in a picture taken from the side. So while the details of the look aren’t very clear, it’s visible that she has donned a black lace overlay top, with a dramatic red skirt covered in floral embroidery over the netting. The last picture in the upload was of Raducanu lounging on the sofa of her hotel room in what seemed to be a white top and black suspender pants and a white slip-on – possibly a mid-shoot or after-shoot click. While the fancy photoshoot caught many eyeballs and attention, there were some people who criticized Emma for diverting focus from tennis, and not prioritizing practice in the off-season.
Backlash at Emma Raducanu’s Dior photoshoot
Emma Raducanu’s overnight rise to the limelight-filled center stage of tennis came with its pros and cons. While the fame aided in many endorsements and hence financial success, it also puts every action of hers since USO 2022 under close scrutiny. The recent photoshoot, for example, received much attention from fans but was also a hotspot for criticism.
Many tennis fans aren’t happy with Emma’s performance this year and consider tasks such as this photo shoot as a frivolous distraction. “You can be a top model or a top tennis player. But not both, not at the same time anyway. Your choice” said a user. He further wrote “too many people these days suffer under the delusion that you can have it all. Newsflash….you can’t!”
“Do this as tennis is not meant for you”, “Queen of retirements and medical time-outs”, and “you can completely give up tennis and still make bank by these photoshoots, which no doubt are now your neck of the woods” were some other harsh comments hurled at the 20-year-old.
