Daniil Medvedev, world number one, made a great start to his hard-court swing to win his first title of the year defeating the defending champion Cameron Norrie in the finals of the Los Cabos Open in straight sets 7-5, 6-0 in one hour and 23 minutes of play. He played in his fourth final of the season and this was his first title win since the US Open 2021. The Russian did not drop a single set all week at the Mexican ATP 250 event to earn his 14th ATP title.

Medvedev was the finalist at the Australian Open 2022 but lost to Rafael Nadal in five sets even though he had won the first two sets but could not hold his nerve against the Spaniard. In the French Open, he got eliminated in the fourth round to Marin Cilic. He could not participate at the All England Club owing to the ban on the Russian and Belarus players.

Daniil Medvedev, in the post-match interview, expressed his feelings about winning his first title of the season. He was very happy with his win and said “ Every match was very good, but the final is always special. Coming here I had lost five finals in a row. That’s not nice, I want to do better. It feels like I just have won the World Cup. You never know if it’s going to happen or not, and for sure before this final, I was a little bit nervous, a little bit more than usual. But now I’m really happy

The Russian had to take a medical timeout in the first set for a hand issue but it did not deter him at all from becoming the champion at Los Cabos. He added “First set we broke each other two times to be at 5-all and he actually came back from 40/15 and I didn’t play badly in that game at 5-4. So I knew I just had to stay there. Actually, bleeding helped me I think a little bit so I could hold my nerve a little bit more. Since then I just managed to play well and it was enough today.

He credited his opponent Cameron Norrie for putting up a tough battle, who had won his first Tour title last year and was looking for another title to his name. He further added “It was not easy. Cam is an amazing player, so it was really intense. When you play against Cam, you know that you have to fight for every point. In the final, you play the best player of this week, so it’s always a high-level match and I’m really happy that I managed to show some good level, some good shots in such an important match.

Medvedev will next play at the National Bank Open in Toronto, where he is the defending champion and will be looking to defend his title with the confidence he has gained after his triumph at Los Cabos.
