The European clay tournaments are all about a build-up to the French Open, and the last but not least one in the string of these events is the Italian Open. This is the third ATP-1000 and the second WTA-1000 clay tournament of the season and it is held in the beautiful Italian capital, Rome. The tennis season has finally reached Italy before moving on to France. The International BNL D’Italia (the official name) has already begun on 8th May with the Qualifier rounds. The first main draw round will happen on the 10th day and the tournament will go on till the 21st of May 2023.
All of the top 5 men’s players will be playing in the tournament, which includes Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud, and Stefanos Tsitsipas. Novak Djokovic will be defending his last year’s title. He defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final match with a score of 6-0,7-6. Djokovic had taken an injury break from the Madrid Open, which Carlos Alcaraz won on Sunday. But the tournament will sorely miss its 10 times champion here- Rafael Nadal.
Rafael Nadal has been withdrawing from all clay tournaments one tournament at a time. He will go on to play French Open without having played a single match in any of the clay tournaments prior to that. The Italian spectators are also going to miss their tennis sensation Matteo Berrettini as he still recovers from a stomach injury.
Carlos Alcaraz will become world no. 1 in the Italian even if he loses the first match. Since he and Djokovic have a very short gap between them, and Djokovic is a defending champion, Carlos Alcaraz will take over the Serb in ranking. The Italian crowd will have their cheer for their local heroes, such as Lorenzo Musetti, Lorenzo Sonego, Fabio Fognini, and Simone Bolelli.
In the women’s group too all the top 5 rankers are playing. This means Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, Ons Jabeur, and Caroline Garcia will all be seen gearing up to win the cup leading up to the French Open. Iga will be defending her 2022 title again this year. Ons Jabeur, who missed the Madrid Open due to her leg injury, is going to add that extra amount of thrill to this tournament as she will be the one to look out for.
All the remainder of the top 10 are also going to play at the event, so this Italian Open will be an exciting journey. Italian home crowd support will be with Camila Giorgi, Sara Errani, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
