“It’s not easy to be next to me” Daniil Medvedev apologizes to his wife after losing in the Halle Open finals

World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev continues to await his first title since winning the 2021 US Open despite having played in 5 finals since then. He recently lost the finals of the 2022 Halle Open going down in straight-sets to Hubert Hurkacz in just 63 minutes losing his second final in two weeks having reached the finals in Libema Open as well last week.

Medvedev was joined by his wife Daria (Dasha) Chernyshkova and coach Gilles Cervara both of whom were sitting in the player’s box cheering Daniili to end his title drought. Since winning the US Open finals, Daniil has lost the finals of 2021 Paris Masters, 2021 ATP Finals, 2022 Australian Open, 2022 Libema Open and the 2022 Halle Open. Tonight’s defeat was rather frustrating for Daniil as he lost to Hurkacz who was playing in his first-ever Grasscourt finals and the odds were in Daniil’s favour going into the match.

With Hurkacz winning the match 6-1, 6-4, the first set had left Daniil quite angry and as a result, he lashed out at his player’s box shouting at the helpless Dasha and Giles who could not help him. While the coach left the stadium angrily, Dasha stayed till the end and having screamed at her earlier, he made sure that he apologised in front of everyone while thanking her for her support.

Dasha, thank you very much for this week. I know that sometimes it’s not easy to be next to me on the court. I hope the next time will be easier and much better,” said Daniil in his on-court interview after receiving the runners-up trophy in Halle.
