Former tennis star James Blake has given his views regarding the sudden withdrawal of Andy Murray from the ongoing Cincinnati Masters. Blake feels that Murray has nothing left to prove to the entire tennis world and that he is competent enough to say no to any single tournament whenever his body doesn’t feel right. He added that Murray has “earned the right to do whatever he wants to do,” for he has very little tennis left in him.

Blake wants Murray to play his tennis in peace and keep on playing “as long as he can,” provided he enjoys doing so. Murray’s sudden withdrawal was hugely impactful after his recent stint at the Canadian Open. He made it to the round of 16 stage of the tournament, beating Lorenzo Sonego and Max Purcell, but ahead of his last 16 matchup against Jannik Sinner, he was forced off due to an abdominal injury.

Blake picked up this issue during his interview with Sky Sports after Murray was criticized a lot by the media for his last-minute withdrawal from Cincinnati. He said, “He’s such a great champion, and the fact that he was always one of the hardest workers now coming back with a metal hip and still working as hard as he does and showing that he loves it because he has no reason to.”

He further added. “He’s already a first-ballot Hall of Famer and one of the all-time greats. He probably has more money than he ever could spend in five lifetimes. He’s doing it because he loves the game so as long as he loves it, do what you love. So if he wants to continue enjoying it, go as long as he can and then enjoy the rest of your life.”

Andy Murray played James Blake at the Queen’s Club Championships way back in 2009. Murray went on to lift his first grass-court title winning the match by 7-5, 6-4 becoming the first British player since Bunny Austin in 1938 to do so. Murray started the match in fine fashion winning the first few games easily but went on to take an early lead but Blake leveled it on 5-5.

Murray went on to win the first set 7-5 and didn’t give Blake any chance of recovering in the second set whatsoever lifting the title which was the start of Murray’s extravagant career. After winning the match, Murray told, “I was quite nervous. People were telling me that no [Briton] had won here for 70-odd years so that got the nerves going, especially when I was serving for the match.”
