Italian youngster Jannik Sinner recently reacted to Rafael Nadal’s comments on him winning the 2022 US Open if he would’ve defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. Sinner lost to Alcaraz in the US Open quarterfinal in a five-set thriller and the Spaniard went on to win the tournament.

Nadal, speaking in Paris a few weeks earlier said that if Sinner would’ve defeated Alcaraz in the quarterfinal, he could easily have gone on to win the title- his maiden Grand Slam. Addressing the same question, Sinner told the Italian media that it is hard to think about the topic in retrospect because the next two matches against Frances Tiafoe and Casper Ruud would’ve been very difficult.

He admitted that the level Alcaraz and himself displayed was very high but despite everything, he only took positive things from the match and is looking ahead to the future.

“It’s hard to talk about it in retrospect. The next match would still have been very complicated against Tiafoe and the final against Ruud too, because he had already reached a Grand Slam final once. The level of tennis that Carlos and I expressed was surely very high. In any case, it’s hard to say, even if this defeat hurt me a lot. But you have to see the positive side of things, maybe it will be useful to me next year,” Sinner said.

Carlos Alcaraz has established himself as the best player this year after achieving many firsts. Not only did he win his maiden ATP 500 and Masters titles this season, but he also won his first Grand Slam title and became the youngest World No.1 in tennis history. He is also the current World No.1 and will head to the 2023 Australian Open as the top seed.

As for Jannik Sinner, he was pretty consistent this season but didn’t make much ground in the rankings. He has some epic matches at the majors this year which also includes a titanic battle with Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon. He surely has lots of potentials and it is just a matter of fact before he wins a major. To answer it, yes, Sinner and Alcaraz are the future of tennis along with a few others.
