With his win over Daniil Medvedev at the China Open, Jannik Sinner has qualified for his maiden year-end championship. While the Italian did compete in the tournament in 2021, he did not qualify for the event. He was an alternate who took Matteo Berretinni’s place after he withdrew due to an injury.
Sinner joins an elite list of players who will also be taking part in the season closer. Alongside the Italian, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev will also participate. He defeated Alex de Minaur in the final of the Canadian Open to secure his first and only Masters 1000 title. Other prominent titles that led to his qualification include China Open 2023 and Open Sud de France, ATP 500, and 250 events respectively. He also made it to the semi-final of the Wimbledon Championship in the 2023 season.
Sinner has three ATP titles in the 2023 season. However, he also made the finals of the Miami Open and the Rotterdam Open, where he was defeated by Daniil Medvedev in both instances. Nevertheless, these feats by the 22-year-old made his maiden qualification to the prestigious season opener, a reality.
However, the Italian has the highest finish of a semi-final appearance at Grand Slams. Wimbledon 2023 gave the Italian this finish. He also has semi-final finishes at the Indian Wells Masters and the Monte-Carlo Masters this year. All these accomplishments by the Italian made it possible for him to qualify for the year-end tournament. When the rankings are recalculated on Monday, the 22-year-old will reach a career-high ranking of World No.4.

The duo engaged in an exhausting match where Sinner defeated the Russian in straight sets. However, both these sets ran to tiebreakers, making it physically challenging for both players.
