Italian tennis ace Jannik Sinner looked like a man on a mission when he took the court against Novak Djokovic in the first semifinal of the 2024 Australian Open.
The 22-year-old was serving with brute force, returning everything, and hitting winners for fun. Such was Sinner’s gameplay in the first two sets that he made Djokovic, a ten-time champion, look like a newbie.
The Italian raced to a 3-0 lead in the opening set and did not look back from there. Although Sinner lost the fourth game in the first set, he won the next three to close up the first set 6-1. In the second set, too, Sinner continued his dominance.
He lost the first game but made a comeback to win three games on the trot. Novak Djokovic again tried to fight back by winning the fifth game, but it did not work as Sinner won three back-to-back games to close out the second set as well. The Italian won it 6-2 without breaking any sweat.
Novak Djokovic fights back but Jannik Sinner also holds on
As Jannik Sinner seemed to be cruising towards a comfortable win, Novak Djokovic fought back. The 36-year-old, despite looking uncomfortable during his changeover, started the third set on a positive note as Djokovic took the first game of the third set.
However, Jannik Sinner was also not ready to let his hard work in the first two sets go to waste. The Italian ace won the second game to level the scores. This cat-and-mouse game kept going as Djokovic and Sinner alternately won games. This meant that the third set had to be pushed into a tiebreaker.
The tiebreaker was also closely contested, with both players winning points alternately. Eventually, Djokovic managed to win two points on the trot and close the set. But this was a job half done, as the Serbian was still trailing.
In the fourth set, Jannik Sinner pulled up his socks and came all guns blazing against the 36-year-old. The Italian ace won the first game quite comfortably.
Although Sinner lost the second game, he made it up by winning the next three. Djokovic tried to stage a comeback through wins in the sixth and eighth games, but Sinner nullified it and claimed the fourth set 6-3 and eventually the match in three hours and 22 minutes.
