Jannik Sinner recently won the first Grand Slam of his career in the 2024 Australian Open and thus became the first-ever Italian men’s player to win the tournament and also the first men’s Italian tennis player to win a Grand Slam since 1987. Filippo Volandri, the captain of Italy’s Davis Cup, did not miss this opportunity to bash Sinner’s doubters, who were trolling him a few months ago and are now praising him for his success.

To put things in context, Jannik Sinner had withdrawn from the 2023 Davis Cup after losing to Alexander Zverev, citing injury as his reason. Back then, the Italian media, some fans, and even former legendary Italian players criticized the youngster for not prioritizing playing for his nation. A few months later, he not only won the Davis Cup for Italy by making a comeback in the Davis Cup but also won his first Grand Slam title.

Italy’s Davis Cup captain, Filippo Volandri, was quick to point out the hypocrisy of these people as the same people who were criticizing him are now all praise for the World No. 4. He went on to praise Jannik Sinner and said that he is extremely simple and down to earth.

Well, there were those who suddenly became Jannik's best friends. You should look inside yourself before using social media to get a couple more likes. Having said that, in my opinion, there are no risks for Jannik. The player is a serious guy, down to earth and nothing changes.

Filippo Volandri says Jannik Sinner will strive to keep playing at his best

Jannik Sinner did not become an overnight success. He gradually worked towards his goal and kept on improving as a player, slowly and steadily, with the help of his dedicated team. Those close to the Italian have said that they expected him to succeed much earlier. Talking on the same line, Filippo Volandri said that the World No. 4 has just started and he has a long way to go.

Once he finishes one goal, he immediately sets another one in front of him. He has a team of professionals who work very well, so there will be no media overexposure. He will do the things he has to do and honor the commitments, but his first thought will be to continue playing at his best.

Sinner recently withdrew from the Marseille Open and is yet to announce in which tournament he will participate next.
